Is Your Student Ready for a Step-Up Instrument?
Your student may be ready for a step-up instrument if one or more of the following apply:
✔️ They have been playing for 2+ years with good practice habits and strong interest ✔️ Their teacher has recommended a step-up instrument ✔️ They are advancing in concert band, have qualified for NJMEA honors bands, or are taking private lessons ✔️ Their current instrument feels limiting in tone, tuning, or response ✔️ They plan to continue playing
If you’re unsure, our staff is happy to help assess your student’s needs and recommend appropriate options.
The Step-Up Difference
Better Sound You’ll notice the difference in tone quality right away.
Control Over Dynamics Be more expressive! Playing soft, loud, and everything in between is easier.
Accurate Intonation Worry less about intonation and having to adjust your mouthpiece or slides so much.
Longevity These instruments are designed to last for many years and will need fewer adjustments than a student instrument getting the same amount of playing time.
FAQs
What’s the difference between a beginner instrument and a step-up?
A beginner instrument is very basic, designed to be more affordable and easier for beginners to learn on. Step-up instruments are built with advanced features such as additional keys; higher quality materials such as silver-plating or solid silver bodies on flutes and trumpets; leather key pads and blue steel springs on saxophones; and extra tubing on trombones and French horns. Each model is unique!
Can I exchange my student rental for a Virtuoso rental?
Yes! If you are currently renting a student instrument from Elefante Music, you can transfer your rental credit to a Virtuoso Step-Up rental and continue renting on a monthly basis or purchase the step-up instrument.
What brands do you carry?
We are an authorized dealer for these educator-approved brands:
Do rental payments really apply toward purchase?
Yes! The majority of your monthly payment will apply towards the purchase. Plus, if you are currently renting a student instrument, you can transfer your credit to a step-up rental!
Is maintenance included?
Yes. Your monthly payment includes general maintenance for repairs needed due to normal wear-and-tear. If you want to add even more coverage, you can purchase our Play It Safe Plan. This is a one-time payment, equal to the cost of one month’s payment, and covers repairs to your rental that we determine are outside the basic maintenance agreement included with your rental. It also covers loss due to Fire or Theft.
What happens when I need a repair?
Bring your instrument to either of our locations. We’ll send it to our repair shop, where our expert technicians will get your instrument in top shape. The turnaround time depends on the work needed, but most repairs take 3-5 days.
How long is the rental period?
Virtuoso Step-Up rentals are exclusively month-to-month. This allows you to accumulate rental credit to use toward the purchase. There is no obligation to rent for a particular time period, and you may purchase or return the instrument at any time.
Is there a discount when I purchase the instrument?
Yes. Your accrued credit will be applied to all rental sales, plus a 40% discount off the list price of the instrument.
Am I obligated to purchase the instrument?
No. You can continue renting on a month-to-month basis or return the instrument with no obligation to continue.
If I purchase a step-up outright, what do I do with my student instrument?
Many students opt to keep their student instrument to use in marching band or so they have a backup when their step-up is in the shop. For other options, talk to one of our experts.
